LaTonya Dockery is not the first girl to wrestle competitively at Loganville High School, but she is one of the most accomplished. She became interested in the sport from her brothers who wanted her to wrestle with them. Coach Graves, the wrestling coach, commented, “She was the first girl wrestler in Loganville High School history to beat a boy. She was also the first girl to actually complete a season.” Despite being the only girl on a team of boys, LaTonya still fits in with the team. When asked about how it was to join the team, she answered, “It was hard at first ‘cause I was scared, like, they wouldn’t want to wrestle me ‘cause I’m a girl.” This, apparently, was not the case. Micheal, the teammate who practices with her, said, “It didn’t really change things ‘cause it was pretty much like I was practicing with one of [the] guys.” LaTonya’s words of advice for girls who might be considering joining a male-dominated sport at Loganville were straight-forward: “You should go out and try to do it and show them that girls can do the same thing that boys can do.”
